RUNNING CORNER: Achilles Tendonitis
What is it?
The Achilles tendon is a band of tissue that connects the calcaneus (heel bone) to the calf muscle of the leg. Injury to the tendon may cause it to become inflamed or torn. Achilles tendonitis is the term used when the tendon is inflamed.
What causes it?
An Achilles tendon may tear during sudden activity such as at the start of a sudden sprint or jump. Achilles tendonitis can be caused by the following:

tight calf muscles or tight achilles tendons

overuse of the Achilles tendon
-
a change in exercise terrain, frequency and/or intensity
-
foot over-pronation
What are the common symptoms?
When a tendon tears or ruptures, a pop may be felt. With Achilles tendonitis, symptoms may include:

pain and swelling over the tendon
-
pain is often felt with a toe rise and when the tendon is stretched
-
decreased ankle range of motion
