Sport Conditioning Program

Physiotherapists and Athletic Therapists at Athlete's Care can design a conditioning program based on a musculoskeletal assessment, which includes an analysis of the patient's sport or activity demands. The spectrum of conditioning services available can be customized to cover any level of activity that a patient is looking to return to after injury.

Whether you are a professional athlete or weekend warrior, the basis for safe and functional conditioning involves achieving proper alignment and the prescription of comprehensive conditioning concepts, including:
  • Core stabilization: build the foundation of your sport conditioning program. Learn to promote proper activation of key muscle groups such as the transversus abdominus, multifidi, diaphragm, and pelvic floor. Strengthening of these muscles can help to prevent injuries to the spine and develop power for sport specific movements.
  • Agility, Coordination, and Balance training: Learn to properly train these essential components of athletic movement. Proprioception or joint position sense can be enhanced with sport-specific drills that challenge the neuromuscular system.
  • Power and Speed work: work on developing acceleration and explosiveness in specific movement patterns that relate to your sport.
  • Plyometrics: exercises geared towards training muscles to reach maximal force in the shortest possible time. This type of exercise will help to develop height and power for sports that require jumping.
  • Flexibility training: work to improve on the range of motion around each joint involved in the movement patterns of your sport. Proper flexibility can help to prevent injury, improve muscle performance, and aid in maintaining sound joint alignment.
  • Multi-dimensional strength training: make strength gains that reflect the needs and demands of your sport. Train movement, not just muscles.
  • Proper recovery strategies: learn a proper warm-down routine, proper stretching techniques, self massage, and other recovery concepts to allow for effective training.
Our Sport Conditioning program can bridge the gap between injury recovery and the safe return to sport or activity. The program can also be used as effectively in injury prevention, preparation for a new sport season, or simply improving general fitness.
