Osteoarthritis or OA affects millions of Canadians and can be debilitating condition that hinders your ability to accomplish everyday tasks. Let us help you manage this chronic condition and improve your mobility and the overall quality of your life.

Osteoarthritis: The Facts

Osteoarthritis or OA affects upwards of 3 million Canadians. That makes it the most common form of arthritis in the country. Contrary to popular misconception, it is not caused by the normal wear and tear of everyday activities. In fact, normal activity and exercise serve to strengthen joints – not wear them down. It is caused by over-use over time (primary OA) or by a specific injury (secondary OA) and it occurs when cartilage, the springy, tough material between joints, wears away.     Joints that can be affected by osteoarthritis are typically knees, hips, neck, lower back, fingers and toes.

Risk factors include:

  • Age – it commonly occurs in those middle-aged or older and by age 70, most of us show some symptoms
  • Family history
  • Weight – extraneous weight can add to excessive wear on joints
  • Injury to joints

As the cartilage begins to wear away, you may notice many common symptoms, including,

  • Stiffness
  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Inflammation
  • The area may feel warm to the touch

Stiffness typically lasts about 15 to 20 minutes first thing in the morning on rising and then decreases. The pain, however, tends to increase over the course of a day. As the pain increases, we tend to try to minimize the load on that joint but less exercise means muscles can weaken and provide inadequate support over time. When the cartilage becomes very worn and there is bone on bone contact, it can be extremely painful.
